SpendWisely guide
Track Klarna, Clearpay & BNPL before you overspend
BNPL feels like free money at checkout. The instalments are real commitments — and they stack quietly until payday no longer covers them.
Short answer: treat every BNPL plan like a bill with fixed dates. Add all active plans to one timeline with rent and direct debits, then forecast the next 30 days — not just this week's balance.
Why BNPL is easy to forget
Klarna, Clearpay, PayPal Pay in 3, and similar services split a purchase across weeks. Each plan is small on its own; together they can take £80–£200 per month you are not mentally accounting for. Banking apps show money out when it happens, not everything already promised.
The stacking problem
Three orders at £30/month each does not feel like £90/month until they land the same week as council tax. That is when people hit overdrafts despite “being careful” day to day.
How to track BNPL properly
- List every active plan: provider, remaining instalments, amount, and due date.
- Add them alongside standing orders and subscriptions — not in a separate mental bucket.
- Include weekend clearance if a due date falls on a non-working day (see weekend bank balance).
- Before a new BNPL checkout, preview the impact on your forecast — not just whether you can afford today's instalment.
